What Causes Kidney Disease While Suffering From Hypertension And Diabetes?

I am female, 66 yrs. and have been taking Lamictal, Lithium, and Emsam for several years - lithium and Lamictal for 12 years. I have High blood pressure (Micardis), pre-diabetes as told by a Dr. a few years ago, and mildly raised cholesterol. I have regular Dr. visits and comprehensive blood panels on a regular basis. Last week my psyche called to say that a creatnine test he ordered just a few days earlier was on the high end. So, I decided to look up and pay more attention to the individual results of 2 recent tests. The last 2 tests were in March 2016 and Dec. 2015. On both tests my creatnine was 1.01-1.02 and GFR 54 and 55. On the line directly below the GFR result on both tests were the words 3rd stage kidney disease. I am completely confused and scared, deciding to halve my lithium, and planning to call my psyche in the morning. Could I really have 3rd stage kidney disease? Healthwise, what do I have to look forward to?

Hello,

Kidney disease where the function of kidneys is affected likely to be seen in patients who are hypertensive, diabetic for a long duration.

There are different stages from stage 1 and further depending on the way kidneys are functioning effectively and that is determined by various blood tests or urine tests.

Depending on the stage every patient has advised an appropriate management plan.

In your case, the doctor has said its stage 3 kidney disease, as you are hypertensive and diabetic.

This is not a very severe condition but I would suggest you not to panic and make sure you follow your doctor’s advice on medications so that further progress can be slowed down by keeping the blood pressure and other parameters in control.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
