What Causes Keratoconus?

sir my bro is having Keratoconus he had undergone c3r and intacs in narayana netralaya Bangalore.now he's dng good. he had complex partial seizures 2 n half yrs back n he's on phenytoin since then. my q is whether this drug caused Keratoconus . i read one article abt phenytoin sayin it caused Keratoconus .im also a doc now joining md medicine in bagalkot frm jun 1st. plz suggest sir.. thanking u..

There is no clear cut etiology of Keratoconus. Systemic conditions like atopy, genetic conditions, connective tissue disorders, mechanical trauma are multifactorial etiological causes.corneal matrix is made up of different types of collagen.phenytoin in chronic cases is known to alter collagen metabolism which leads to weakening of cornea and thus keratoconus
