What Causes Joint Ache Along With Dry Cough And Fever?

Last week I came down with the flu--achy joints, bad dry cough, fever. I laid low for 4 days using cold medicine at night and heating pads during the day. The cough became productive on day 4 with gobs of yellow crud. It is now day 7. I am back to work but exhausted, still have productive coughing though not as bad. The past couple of nights have have been sweating to the point of waking up cold and changing my clothes. I don t feel nearly as bad as 4 days ago but now one side of my back feels like there is pressure on it. It might just be muscle issue from coughing. How long should I let it go before having a dr listen to my lungs?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using health care magic

If it is only related to muscle strain from coughing and not sure to severe infection of the lungs, then the use of of a cough suppressant to reduce the coughing and an anti inflammatory pain medication would be helpful.

Anti inflammatory meds include naproxen, cataflam, ibuprofen, voltaren. One of these can be bought over the counter.

If you use these meds for a few days and there is no improvement, then you should be seen.
If there is any worsening prior to the few days completion then you should see your doctor.

I hope this helps
