Greetings. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I carefully read your query.
The sensation or feeling you had is called a
palpitation. It is produced after an extrasystole or "skipped beat", referring to a more forceful and hard beat generated from the natural pacemaker of the heart, the
sinus node, right after the beat produced by the ectopic are that generated the extrasystole. This forceful beat normally is accompanied with the feeling of the heart coming to the throat, momentary
shortness of breath and a moment of weakness. This ectopic beats, although totally benign when they are not more often than 10.000 a day, have their well-known triggers. Practically, every action, mechanism and food or beverage that have effects on the heart electrical and conduction systems, can cause this, e.g. alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages, constant psychological
stress and moderate to vigorous physical activity. I would recommend you to withhold or, at least, reduce caffeine and alcohol intake, also have a seven to ten day course with sedatives, such as benzodiazepines, but only after you have consulted a clinical
psychologist or a
psychiatrist. If these are worrisome events to you and affect your quality of life, then you can be put on a 24-hour rhythm monitor, to evaluate the amount of this phenomena, spun in one day.
I hope I was helpful with my answer.
My regards,
Dr. Meriton
