What causes irregular and prolonged periods?

Hi,I am 49 years old and will be 50 in January. I am having irregular periods,sometimes they last 7 days or more sometimes slow not to heavy. Then maybe after that is over maybe a week later I m spotting off and on some days skip,by time this is over maybe nothing for a couple of days then here comes the spotting for 3 or 2 days and my period starts, can I get a break what is going on?

Your problem might be due to hormonal imbalance due to pre-menopause.
During this time period might be less or more, irregular.
But in your case bleeding is practically continues so it is advisable to consult Gynaec and get examined to rule out any problem in your uterus.
Ultra sound will be helpful.
