What Causes Involuntary Movement Of Thumb Towards The Palm S Center?

Occasionally my thumb moves involuntarily to the center of my palm. I have to physically move it back into position.. This has happened on both hands. Sometimes it requires massaging and gentle working the thumb away from the palm. There is ususaaly some pain involved. Do you know why this happens?
