What Causes Intermittent Pain Under The Knee Cap?

Hi there, My right knee is hurting inconsistently. Sometimes just under the knee cap, other times in the back right of the knee. No instability felt. Occasionally I get sharp pains inside which subside quickly. I hurt it by falling and basically sitting on my foot i.e. forced over flexion. Some days I walk fine and others it feels inflamed and weak. Previous history: Medial repair 1985, ACL repair 1993. Any clues on what I might have hurt? Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers Tim

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Tim.

You need an MRI of the knee to determine exactly what the problem is here, but I think it's chondromalacia patella--a thinning of the cartilage behind the kneecap. Physical therapy should be tried first, and, if that's not effective, you'll need arthroscopic surgery to clean up the debris around the cartilage
