What Causes Intermittent Pain In The Spleen While Having Chronic Cough?

Hi I coughed very hard earlyier and my spleen area really hurt later I sneezed and it hurt worst, hours later I coughed and I no longer hurt but I was still aware of it. Should I be worried my spleen burst? I was in car wreck a few days ago and was planning to see a doctor soon, now I am worried should I go to the ER?

Hi,

Though it is understandable to be concerned , this is not likely. Rupture of the spleen would be associated with significant continuous pain along with additional symptoms.

Since the spleen has a large blood supply and plays a role in the immune system, there would be blood loss which would cause significant weakness, clammy sensation, dizziness, fatigue. In the absence of these symptoms along with the resolution of the pain, splenic rupture is not likely.Severe coughing can affect the muscles in the chest and abdomen, so this may be the source of your pain.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
