Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Intermittent Pain In Head Lasting For 15 To 30 Seconds?
My husband has experience a lightning-like pain in the side of his head off and on for years. They last about 15-30 seconds. Lately they are more frequent and powerful. Now they come with an intense metallic taste. Can you help identify what this may be?
I’m sorry to hear that your husband is experiencing pain issues. It sounds like the symptoms may be from trigeminal neuralgia. This is caused by problems in the trigeminal nerve that provides feeling to the face.
Pain is often described as “electric” and short. It can worsen so that pain can be longer. The metallic taste is less common but possible. It is somewhat treatable though.
Nerve medication can be used to treat this condition. Carbamazepine or gabapentin are often used. Dental problems should also be explored to make sure it’s not a tooth issue.
Seeing a dentist and neurologist would be a good next step. Luckily trigeminal neuralgia is treatable and your husband’s condition will most likely improve.
Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong
