What Causes Intermittent Heart Palpitations?

I have occasional fast heartbeat lasting from 30 seconds to 6 hours at a time. Usually from 1 to 3 times per month. Have taken 25 mg. of metropolol for two years, and tried 50 mg for a few months with no change in frequency. When the episodes first started they were more intense than now as far as how fast and hard my heart was beating. The doctor has called it SVT and not Afib per se. Do I need an ablation procedure or just put up with this? Thank you, YYYY@YYYY
