What Causes Intermittent Fullness In Ears?

I am 54 with cervical stenosis, TMY and Hoshimotos. I have documented hearing loss in both ears, but greated loss on the left side. This I attribute to 35 years as a musician as I tend to position my left ear closer to my guitar while I play. I began singing about 1 year ago. About two weeks ago I developed clogged nasal passages, no infection, just clogged. I effectively treated that with over the counter Nasacort. I also went to an ENT who ruled out sinus issues. However, I develope a feeling of fullness behind both ears, mostly left side fullness which comes with a sensation of loss of hearing. This develops whenever and then resolves at random. I neglected to wear my splint for several years, but just went back to one last week to see if this helps the symptoms. Also I was treated by a dentist apx 3 weeks ago for a crown on an upper left molar which I know will soon need a root canal as it is sensitive to cold. I heard that TMJ can effect your hearing, so I am no longer working on my vocals. This is just a hodge podge mess and I do not know where to point my finger and say this is it! I intend to see my neurologist for hios opinion. Any direction would be appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Given that you suddenly had clogged nasal passages, you most likely have allergies. Allergies can cause inflammation and mucus production. These issues can cause eustachian tube dysfunction. If the eustachian tubes are blocked, pressure builds up behind your ears and can feel like pressure. Patients often describe it as 'the feeling of being under water' or 'I can't pop my ears'. Treating your allergies more aggressively will fix the issue. You could use an oral antihistamine, the Nasocort, and pseudophedrine (for a few days). If this doesn't work, you may need prescribed oral steroids.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong, General & Family Physician
