What Causes Intermittent Dark Urine?

For the past few months I have had intermittently dark urine. Had a urinalysis at my family practice Dr she office yesterday and I just about filled the test cup. It looked like a cup or Coke or Dr pepper. She is referrring me to an urologist. Appt next week.

Colour of urine depends upon many factors like age,physical activity and hydration status,presence of underlying medical /surgical conditions,intake of certain medications.
Dark urine can be due to dehydration,presence of stones,infection,mass,trauma in the urinary system,kidney,liver & blood disorders.
For ruling out all these possibilities,I need to ask you certain questions-
Do you have cramps like pain in abdomen radiating to back?
Do you workout a lot without adequate fluid intake?Do you have fever with decreased appetite and nausea?
Also if the report of your urinalysis denote presence of protein,pus cells or blood cells in urine then its right to go with the decision of visiting an urologist for further action.
