What Causes Intermittent Chest Pain Radiating To The Back?

I am having some chest pain and am debating as to whether I need to go to the ER. I have been having these pains on and off for the past couple of weeks, but this evening it seems to be more constant. The pain is a pressure type of pain just slightly right of the center of my chest; it is not severe, but it is noticable. It does seem to radiate to my back, especially my right shoulder blade. My blood pressure normally runs low, I have taken it 3 times in the past 1/2 hour: 112/64, 102/ 60, 103/60. I do not take any medications or have any other health issues.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Chest pain can be due to any structure in the chest from the skin inwards. Pain can originate from the skin, muscles and other soft tissue, bones, heart, lungs, esophagus. Heart related pain tends to occur in persons with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obese or overweight, smokers or with a family history of high cholesterol.

It also tends to occur with activity when the heart is working more than usual and it is relieved by rest (sitting or laying down). If you fit any of these criteria, you should be seen as soon as possible in the ER.If this is not the case and the pain is not severe then you should consider making an appointment to see your doctor as soon as one is available for assessment and treatment.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
