What Causes Insomnia?

Greetings: I am doing some research as to which of my VA prescribed medications could be causing my insomnia problems. The Insomnia has been an on going problem for the past 10 plus years. The VA Doctors have not been helpful or even willing to talk with me about my sleep problems.

Hello,

I cannot say in your particular case, but generally, drugs that affect the brain are the ones to cause insomnia. This includes common anti-depressants such as Prozac does this in at least 10% of those taking it. Stimulants also can do this, and this includes Adderall drug of course, but also drugs used for asthma. Steroids would be included in this list.

In addition, there are a wide variety of non-drug reasons for insomnia such as poor sleeping habits, poor environment and a lot of psychological conditions.

In addition, removal of factors is one of the most common causes of insomnia. Decreased use of alcohol, narcotics, or stopping any sedative usually causes insomnia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
