What Causes Insomnia And RLS Post Withdrawal From Dilaudid?

I took Dilaudid 4 mg every 4 hrs for 3 weeks following surgery. I stopped the medication 14 days ago. The worst withdrawal symptoms ended after 6 days but I m still having difficulty sleeping more than 2 hrs a nite & I have RLS thru the nite. How much longer can I expect these symptoms to last?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello ,
Welcome to HCM.
RLS and sleeping problems are clearly hydromorphone withdrawal symptoms .
As far as withdrawal symptoms are concerned so I would like to inform you that this medicine is faster acting and it's withdrawal symptoms resolves quite faster as well compared to other drugs . Its always better to taper off such medicines slowly rather discontinuing suddenly . I think you have passed the time which was worst for withdrawal and in coming days there should be improvement and by the end of 3 to 4 week after stopping , all withdrawal symptoms should resolve .
Best Regards ,
Dr.S.Tomar
