My 94 yo mother-in-law just stated that she has had a sensation where her back across her waist internally feels like it is on fire. It has happened a few times in recent months, always in bed after midnight. Is this something that Should be checked soon or wait until her next dr. visit?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have inflammation in lower back. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like , herniated Disc , degenerative Disc Disease , spondylolisthesis , spinal stenosis or osteoarthritis . I would suggest you to apply warm compresses to back , take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and take proper rest . If condition doesn't get well then consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI or physical examination . Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory along with physical therapy . Doctor may also recommend surgery in case of severe damage .
