What Causes Inflamed White Spots On The Tonsils?

hi! Last week I was diagnosed with mono and three days ago my tonsils became so inflamed it was hard to breathe and very red. There are also white spots behind the tonsils and down my throat. Is that normal for mono? Also one side of the tonsils white spots are turning kind of black and gray is that normal?
