What Causes Increased Heart Rate Post Surgery For Burst Appendix?

Hello. My mother is 72 years old and recently had her appendix burst and her gallbladder was also found to be diseased. They misdiagnosed her 3 times before they finally discovered her appendix had burst 4 days later. After surgery she had a terrible time with her blood pressure going up as well as her heart rate. She had no previous issues. Her BP finally came down with the addition of 3 BP meds, but her heart rate continues to be over 90 and up to 111. It s been two and half weeks since the surgery and she still had NO energy and is not vomiting. They tell me her blood work is coming back fine. I strongly feel something else is wrong... Perhaps her heart. They continue to tell her it s going to take time to heal. True, but she should be feeling better, not worse. I m afraid the poison from her burst appendix has affected other organs. What should we be looking for? Thank you so much for your time. Tara Osborn

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

when appendix burst the fecal mater inside the bowel gets spilled inside the abdomen and will cause infection due to the germs present in the fecal material. This is the reason for the high heart rate. This condition is a night mare and the recovery is usually slow that to she is an elderly women. At the old age the body immune system and healing power is not as strong as when we are young. so it will take time to come back to normal on antibiotic therapy. best think we can do is to monitor her conditions continuously.

Hope it helps. If you need further, detailed and quick assistance related to any health issues in future, feel free to 'ask me a question' directly from my profile.

Have a wonderful time ahead.
