What Causes Increase In Heart Rates?

Sometimes when I lay down to go to sleep and also sometimes when I am just sitting in a chair watching TV, my heart starts to beat very hard a fast but it only lasts for a couple of seconds and then stops. Then it will start again a few seconds later. Eventually it stops after about 5 minutes and only happens occasionally. What could this mean?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The given symptom of irregular heart beat could be suggestive of arrhythmia (Cardiac illness) rhythm disturbances and it need to be check out with the help of EKG and clinical examination, sometime it may be due to some functional elements and not the heart disease. Beside these, other reasons are also there that depends upon the age and gender which is not mentioned here.
Hope I have answered your query.
