What Causes Impaired Balance With Severe Pain In Legs Of A Diabetic Patient?

My Mother has Type 2 diabetes and takes meds to control it. We have been trying to diagnose why she has been falling, having trouble walking and standing up, being dehydrated, etc., etc. The Dr. today told her she was going to have a AC1 test done next week....could the development of type 1 possibly be the cause? We have had both a CT scan and MRI and all have come back normal. She is in severe pain in her legs, has one knee replacement and also has spinal stenosis.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* Impaired balance in legs with severe pain can be part of lack of blood supply from diabetic occlusion of arteries, associated neuronal disturbances in terms of neuropathy from ischemia of nerves, added effects from spinal stenosis.

* An additional work up with vascular doppler of lower limb and nerve conduction studies are best recommended at this point of view for best possible treatment guidelines.

Till that time, control of blood sugar is a must to follow.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
