What Causes High Fever Along With Headache And Vomiting?

My 17 year old son has had intermittent high fever (as much as 104.5) for 3-4 days with headache and vomiting whenever he tries to eat. Sweats and Chills. Originally diagnosed with flu and put on Tamiflu 2 1/2 days ago with no change. Went back to doc today, spots on tonsils observed, also passed out at doctors office briefly. Diagnosed now with tonsillitis (no flu) and pneumonia ruled out. Nothing prescribed. i had tonsillitis chronically when young and it was never like this - with really high fever and vomiting for several days. My son was in Ecuador 3 1/2 weeks ago. Concerned this could be malaria or something else related to the trip.

Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM
I have read and understood your concern.
High fever may be caused by many medical conditions. In the case of your son, tonsilitis may be a possible cause.Tonsilitis is mostly caused by viral infections and symptomatic treatment may help. However, bacteria infection or superinfection are possible and will need antibiotics. Persistence of symptoms on treatment suggest the treatment should be reevaluated and may also suggest his problem is not of viral origin.Malaria is another possible cause of such symptoms since he is in a malaria zone.A malaria test will be very important. If ruled out, his Doctor should consider prescribing anti-pyretics/anti-inflammatory drugs and also antibiotics if symptoms persist.
Hope this will help. You may write back if more concerns
