What Causes High Fever Along With Chills?

A 27 year old healthy male started experiencing high fever and cold chills after receiving very stressful news. It has now been 14 hours and he is still exhibiting these symptoms. He has indicated that he can feel his brain boiling hot . He is not as stressed at this moment as he was at the onset of the news, but is still having the same level of symptoms. What could possibly be the diagnosis? A viral infection? Low blood pressure?

The following are the causes of high fever with chills :
1) Malaria
2) Urinary tract infections
3) Pyogenic infections (pus causing) like lung infections
4) Enteric fever
5) Some viral fevers


Let me tell you some important points:

1) As you said high fever(>101F), a thermometer measurement is essential to confirm it.
2) Let him have the following investigations done : complete blood counts, peripheral smear(blood), urine examination.
3) If all of the above causes are ruled out, we need to think of any psychiatric reasons as there was some stressful event before illness. So, just try to counsel him.
