What Causes Hiccups Followed By Shortness Of Breath And Nausea?

Beginning last night , my husband has begun experiencing the following troubling symptoms. It starts with hiccups, a brief shortness of breathe, nausea, followed by a heavy feeling in his chest that is combined with the feelings of an anxiety attack - feelings of pressure on chest and hard to breathe. He has heavy saliva that is like continual nasal drainage continuously. He heads to the restroom as he is not sure that he won t vomit, but he hasn t yet. He also suffers from double vision and shadowed images not only during the attack, but constantly now since this started. This has occurred 5 or 6 times in the last 24 hours - occurring every 3-4 hours. If I give him a hard, secure hug holding tightly with centralized pressure to the right and left of the spinal cord, that seems to help, along with ice water. My husband has rheumatoid arthritis, was diagnosed 2 years ago. He is 100% disabled and is still searching for something to put it into remission. He does take quite a few meds, but has not started anything new in the last few weeks. He takes Xeljanz, methotrexate, prednisone, exalgo, oxycodone (for breakthrough pain if exalgo isn t sufficient), Zyrtec for seasonal allergies, Wellbutrin for depression, norvasc for high blood pressure, trazadone to help sleep, iron for anemia, calcium for osteoporosis and axiron or androgel for low T. He is just coming off of a week of feeling flu like symptoms consisting of vomiting and diahrea. He is a 48 year old white male. This is really scaring him and has him upset. Any ideas?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi! The symptoms your husband is experiencing can be side effects of drugs like Xeljanz, which can produce a flu like syndrome. The drugs on his list can also produce gastritis and thus symptoms like nausea and hiccup. I'd suggest you contact your doctor. If I were your doctor, I'd carry out complete blood counts and liver and kidney function tests first. If they do not require me to alter the drug regimen, I'd add acid reducing and stomach protecting drugs like proton pump inhibitors and antacids. Trust I have answered your question.
