What Causes Heart Palpitations While Sleeping?

Last night my heart felt like it was beating really fast after I had gone to bed. My husband listened to my heart and said it was going fast too. I took 4 baby aspirins and tried to take some deep breaths to relax. It lasted about 4 hours and went away. I have had this to happen between a year apart to 6 months apart and around 2 to 4 hours. I have told my family physician and he said if it got worse or more often to let him know. Is this normal? I am age 60 and in pretty good health.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Anxiety can be a possible cause of palpitations but I would advise you to have an ECG done, just to rule out any rhythm issues with the heart.
If the ECG is normal than this is more reassuring, especially because you do have these so rare.
I would also recommend you to go to the ER when you have these palpitations next time and have the ECG at that time as well as this would be a more accurate ECG.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
