What Causes Heart Palpitations And Breathlessness Inspite Of Taking Valium And Propranolol?

Hi, I just want to ask about this problem that I have. I am 27 years old and my problem started last 2 months ago. I had these fast palpitations which it was my first time that happened to me. It was accompanied with shortness in breathing, tingling sensation, coldness in hand and feet, low body temperature and numbness of the whole body. I usually have a BP around 110/70 but during that time my BP reached above the normal BP and got a pulse of 130. I went to a doctor and he said I have anxiety that caused nervousness. He ordered me to have a lab tests and everything turned out fine. My ECG was fine also but when my doctor used his stethoscope to hear my heart, he said that the beating was inconsistent. He gave me Valium ( I only take this before going to sleep but had stopped since I could already sleep) and Propranolol (this is for maintenance). And I was given Bicom ( B1, B6 & B12 vitamins taken every morning).I was feeling okay afterwards but after 2 months, the symptoms had came back. So, I would like to ask your insights regarding my problem. I am already bothered with this. Hope to hear your answers soon.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You has episodes of racing heart, palpitations, breathlessness, tingling sensations, coldness of feet and hands, numbness of body etc and every investigations came normal. So most likely this occurred due to severe anxiety or panic attacks.

The drugs you were taking that is Propranolol and Diazepam both are commonly used in relief of symptoms of anxiety and should be taken on SOS basis preferably. These are not the definitive treatment and for proper treatment of these symptoms medicines like SSRIs or SNRIs should be used. Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Sertraline etc are used commonly. These medicines if used regularly will help to reduce the frequency of these episodes and you will feel fine. Till then Valium or Propranolol can be used on SOS basis. Please consult a psychiatrist for treatment.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
