What Causes Heart Palpitations Along With Ankle Swelling And Leg Pain?

My sister called having heart palpitations, huge swelling in the ankles and left leg pain. No personal history of heart issues but our parents do. She is being taken to the emergency room but I m looking for information on what it possibly could be. She said her palpitations have stopped but her ankles are continuing to swell at an alarming rate.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello. Your sister does seem to have a heart condition which is causing her heart to not pump blood effectively - what is called a low Ejection Fraction. That is the reason why all the water which would ideally go out through the kidneys is getting accumulated in the body especially the ankles as they are the most dependent part. She would be given diuretics for making all that water go out of the kidneys and also tests would be done to find the exact cause why her heart is not pumping effectively - may be because of ischemia, rhythm defects, hypertension, etc.- which can then be treated accordingly. Hope this helps.
