What Causes Headache In A Child?

My granddaughter is 8 years old. Today she mentioned several times that she feels short and it felt weird. On Friday her school had field day, and at the end she said she had a headache, but it went away. Do you have any advice as to what the weird feeling may be? Should I take her to the doctor?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

I don’t think it is required to see doctor urgently. In children, causes are usually benign and include tension-type headache, cluster headache, and chronic daily headaches. These are usually self-limiting and we recommend rest, avoiding lights, noise and smoky areas and take non-steroid pain killers such as Ibuprofen. If there is associated nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and extreme sensitivity to light, and sound then this is suggestive of migraine and in this case you should see doctor with your child. Otherwise, you can just watch and wait, give Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen and avoid stress factors that I have mentioned.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
