What Causes Headache, Body Pain And Fatigue Despite Taking Ibuprofen And Aleve?

This is 5th day of symptoms. Tried ibuprofen and Aleve with no help. Symptoms are as follows: headache, all-over body ache, all joint ache, muscle ache, fatigue, not sleeping due to ache in right arm. Most troubling is ache/pain at center of chest and between shoulder blades. If I walk slowly and lightly not bad. If walk with jarring, pain makes me hold breath. Also seems I have poison ivy/oak. Doesn t really itch but using caladryl. Six days ago I had scraped, sanded, and painted a few hours. Likely explains constant ache in that elbow, but not other body pain. Not sure if I should get appointment with my gp. I doubt he can do much and maybe should just wait longer.Linda

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The pain in the center of the chest may possibly be due to costochondritis which is inflammation of the cartilage in this area. It can happen with excess activity or lifting. Anti-inflammatory pain killers such as the ibuprofen you were using are normally first line treatment but if there is no change, stronger medications may be needed.

Initially a different anti inflammatory such as Naproxen or Celebrex can be tried. If you have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure or diabetes or smoking or a family history of heart disease then heart disease should be ruled out as a cause of your pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
