i had protected sex with an HIV positive prostitute a month ago. while having sex the condom broke, but quickly pulled out, in less than a minute, and washed my penis with water. however, a month later now I am feeling some headache, joint pains in the knees, and some flue. I am infected with HIV?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
As per your explanation of doubt we can not say it's a protected Sex. In fact intercourse with HIV positive person with any kind of protective measures is not a safe intercourse. Any kind of Biological fluid like Blood, Saliva, Semen, Vaginal Secretion of HIV positive person can infect healthy partner.
In your case, condom was broken during intercourse as u said. Its serious thing and special attention is required. You should consult your primary physician as soon as possible and discuss the problem. HIV infection does not shows its symptoms immediately like after a month. Infection starts to show symptoms only after Viral load increases in body.
1st of all you have to check your blood 'CD 4' count by blood tests and keep it checking after every 2-3 months.
HIV infection window period is upto 10 years in which affected individual is asymptomatic so monitoring CD4 is mandatory. Once your physician notices decrease in CD4, he will start you on Anti-Retroviral Treatment.
There is one more test call 'PCR-Polymerase Chain Reaction '. PCR test is earliest detection test for HIV infection. Consult your primary physician as soon as possible and discuss it with him.

Thanks & Take Care,
Dr. Suraj D.
