What Causes Grey Colored Bowel Movement?

My two month old son s poop is gray, but we recently switched him to a formula high in iron. I was wondering if that could cause his poop to be gray. His behavior is normal he plays with his bouncer tries to take my glasses and babbles away to me. He has an appointment next week for his shots but I was wondering if I need to take him in sooner?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Iron would generally cause his stools to be dark brown to black. If he stools are gray it is not due to the extra iron as generally the iron taken orally causes the stools to be dark brown to black.

On the other hand, I would not expect that the extra iron in the formula to darken his stools either so the grey colour in his stools is not related to the iron in the formula.

If his stools go on to be grey for longer then 2 weeks you will need to discuss this with your doctor, it is not urgent, you can wait till his next appointment next week.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
