What Causes Greenish Brown Phlegm On Coughing After Lung Surgery?

My husband has Copd. He also had lung surgery 1 year ago which removed a calcified growth and the top third of his right lung. He has been coughing up greenish/brown phelm, and is currently on an antibiotic..this is day 6 of 10. The question I have is...when he coughs there is a horrible odor that he emits. What is that from and why is there an order?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
The odor is likely from a lung infection with anaerobic bacteria and unless he's on an antibiotic like Clincamycin, the infection may not have been properly treated
