What Causes Gastritis And Mood Swings In A Child Post Fundoplication Surgery?

Hi, my 1.5 year old son old son had a laproscopic fundoplication surgery 5 month ago following the diagnosis of reflux . at the age of 3 month he had ng tube and after that they put him a peg. At first everything was fine. Two days after surgery, he began to eat by mouth (between 60-100 grams at a time, every two hours), when occasionally we had to open the tube for air and saliva. . After a week or so there has been a deterioration. For six days in a Row He was in a bad mood, crying most of the time, scremming from pain, vomited a lot of salive and gas through the tube and was not interested in eating. Also he began defecated (feces) every two days instead of several times a day. Afterwards The situation has improved and he was in a good mood for a week (but ate much less through the mouth). A week later deteriorated again just like the first week, and the good week and bad week continue until now. the doctors can not figure out what the problem is. He had gastroscopy, ultrasound and so on buy they couldn t find somthing which can explain those sympoms I wanted to ask whether this situation is Due to surgery? is it a complication from this this surgery? Is that something that will be gone by itself ? what can explain something that come and go every 7 days? is the problem of vomiting saliva and gas through the tube is something that will disappear with time? Thank you.

Hello,

Mood swings in your child may be because of vagus nerve injury. Vagus nerve injury occurs in about 2% of fundoplication cases. Vomiting saliva and gas through the tube will subside eventually. Sometimes the mood swings may not be a complication of surgery but due to psychological factors. Please discuss the probability of vagus nerve injury with your surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
