What Causes Frequent Urination After Removing A Kidney Stone?

My friend just had a procedure to remove a kidney stone. He had to spend overnight in the hospital the pain was quite bad. However, about the time being discharged he found he had to pee every 15-20 minutes and have not had any sleep. What is causing this to happen?? This was supposed to be a fairy simple procedure.
