What Causes Frequent Nose Bleeds And Bad Breath?

Hi Dr. Submit Bhatti, I have a six year old son with frequent nose bleeds when the air is dry and now he is having bad breath issues could these be related? He was at the dentist for teeth cleaning about three months ago but sometimes his breath is really bad. During his nosebleed spells I have to keep his nose lubricated every few days or he will have nosebleeds daily. Thanks

Hello,

Probable causes of nosebleed in your child are nose picking leading to trauma, foreign bodies, septal abnormalities like deviated nasal septum, dry weather, various nasal antihistaminic sprays, nasal corticosteroids, bacterial, viral and allergic rhinosinusitis and nasal tumors.
Administer manual pressure application at both nostrils for at least 10 mins. In case of dry air or weather, humidification and moisturization of air and nasal saline sprays would help in lubrication. If the above methods fail, nasal packing is done by a ENT specialist. If necessary, nasal cauterization

Now, coming to bad breath. Nasal bleeding is not related to bad breath. Causes of bad breath in children are poor oral hygiene, eating pungent foods like garlic, thick coating on the tongue, tonsil infection, adenoid infection leading to mouth breathing, tooth decay and cavities, gum infections, not enough saliva or dry mouth and frequent upper respiratory infections or allergies. Just visit an ENT doctor to get your child checked clinically and for appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
