What Causes Frequent Bowel Movements?

I am 73 yrs old female, working and active. For the past few months I am having bowel problems, frequent urges of a bowel movement. Result are a very soft , formless bowel leaving excess matter. I am using moist towelettes for cleanliness. Should I be concerned?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my clinical experience, the current presentation suggests viral or bacterial infection if it is of short duration and recent onset. One has to be suspicious of internal bowel pathology of significance if it is from long term basis (as there can be inflammatory bowel disease or else).

Wish this information will help you. Do feel free to ask further doubts.
