What Causes Foul Smelling Urine?

Thank you. The odor of my urine has changed over the last few weeks. It is strong smelling even though my urine is light in color. I don t have any symptoms of a UTI and other than a cold, I feel fine. There is, however, more leakage than normal too. Any ideas? This is the first I decided to start investigating. hj

hello
welcome to hcm
well, usually the normal urine is odourless and any foul smell in urine may indicate some underlying medical problem, though there are many possible causes of foul smelling urine,i would mention the common causes--

(1) CONCENTRATED URINE
when a person doesnt consume adequate quantity of water, his urine becomes concentrated because kidneys conserve water and hence urine will contain more concentrated quantities of certain salts and chemicals which can cause foul smelling urine so make sure you drink adequate amount of water every day, atleast 3-4 litres in a day

(2) INFECTION ANYWHERE IN THE URINARY TRACT
a infection by bacteria or yeast in the kidneys/ureters/urinary bladder/urethra/prostate can cause foul smell in urine

(3) NON BACTERIAL URETHRITIS i.e inflammation of urethra or urinary bladder due to anything apart from infection can cause smell from urine

(4) CERTAIN FOODS
some foods particularly asparagus and protein rich foods can cause very
foul smelling urine

(5) DIABETES
diabetes or intake of excess amount of sugar can cause a very peculiar smell from urine due to production of ketones

i would advice you to get done the following tests to rule out any particular underlying cause

(1) RFT's i.e renal function tests
(2) BLOOD SUGAR F/PP
(3) URINE COMPLETE ANALYSIS
(4) URINE CULTURE AND SENSTIVITY
(5) ULTRASOUND OF PROSTATE AND KUB REGION

once you get these tests done you can either send us a scanned copy of your test reports for evaluation and further guidance or else you can consult with your treating doctor so that appropriate treatment can be prescribed if required
hope you find my advice helpfull
