What Causes Food To Get Stuck In The Throat?

Sometimes when I eat the food gets stuck in my throat. It could be any food but I noticed it is usually meat, pasta, rice. It also happens when I eat too fast due to hunger; therefore, eating a large amount of food (any food) and the food gets stuck in my throat. Usually a couple of very large gulps of water pushes the food down. My question is am I suffering from some sort of illness? It started about 5 years ago and I am now 61 years old.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

NO, there is not likely a disorder present. As you mentioned, this tends to occur if you eat quickly because you are hungry, this is a common response to eating quickly. Eating at a slower pace would help to prevent this from occurring. If it starts to occur even when you eat slowly then you would need to be assessed.

GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) can sometimes cause food to feel stuck or may cause the food to be regurgitated. This may be associated in some people, with bloating, acid taste in the mouth, and burning sensation of the chest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
