What Causes Fluid In The Ears After Recovering From Flu?

Within the past 3 weeks I have recovered from the flu that has been terrorizing everyone. Although I am feeling fine, for the past week or so, I have fluid in my left ear. It is NOT like fluid in your ear when you have been swimming. This does not feel like it is down into the ear canal itself. In fact, if I gently push all around the outside of my ear, I can actually hear fluid squishing around. If you think of your ear as a clock, I can literally push all around the clock and feel/hear fluid. If you have every touched and felt subcutaneous emphysema on a patient, that is exactly what it feels/sounds like, only around my ear. Does not hurt, but it is annoying. Can you recommend anything? Thank you and have a marvelous Monday! Kim

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is a harmless clinical condition called steroid otitis. It is quite common after a simple viral fever and will settle by itself. No definite treatment is required either.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
