Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. My name is Jess. I ve been experiencing some odd changes in my hearing. The sounds around me fade in and out. Like when you turn the volume up and down on a remote. It is constant for a few seconds and sometimes a couple minutes. It has been quite frequent for 2 months now. It happens at random times. It s very noticeable and scary. Sometimes for a few seconds I can t hear anything but that s on rare occasions. Do you know what it might be?
The most common cause of fluctuations in hearing is Wax in the ear. Presence of wax in the ear may hinder hearing. Visit an ENT, get physically examined. If its wax, you will need to get an ear wash done by the ENT,
After that, you can get an Audiometry test done to rule out any hearing problem.
Acute Otitis Media(Middle ear infection) & Meniere's disease can be the other factors causing fluctuations in hearing. Get evaluated, get treated at the earliest.
You may need some oral antibiotics & ear drops to apply locally.
Avoid swimming or cleaning your ears. Permanent hearing loss can occur if you neglect treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
