What Causes Extreme Pain In Foot And Toes Post Cervical Fusion?

My son who had cervical fusion c-3-4-5 or 4-5-6 about five years ago is now experiencing extreme (no feeling at all) in the toes and the end half of each foot. He is 58 now but when he was 6 he broke his femor up near the top. He fell off of a bicycle. We lived in a small town and the Ortho. Apparently wasn t very good because I obtained the X-Ray and he had not set it properly. My son has had to wear a lift in one shoe to protect his back ever since he joined the Marines and nearly wasn t accepted because of thisbecause the medical exam detected this. The simple addition of a lift(?) corrected this. I don t believe degenerative disc disease can be passed down but I have had my lumbar (L-4-5&S-1) fused (1988) and my neck (C-4-5-6-7) fused in 2003. My daughter also experiences neck and low back pain. This is a lot of background but I thought it might help. My sons numbness in his feet should be seen by a doctor but you can t tell a grown man what to do even if you are his mother. I suspect his health insurance may be the reason, he changed positions recently. He is a computer graphic design artist and I m pretty certain that his job is hard on his neck. Can his neck problems and the numbness in his feet be connected. Please advise me. DJKJ

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is unlikely be related to cervical fusion. Other conditions like plantar fasciitis and arthritis has to be considered. Consult an orthopedic and get evaluated. In severe cases you might require steroid injection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you all the best.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
