What Causes Extreme Pain In Abdomen Before And During Menstrual Cycle?

I have been having extreme pain during and slightly before my period. It is similar to appendicitis in intensity. It is also flares up really bad when I go to the bathroom. I m wondering if this is something I should make an appointment with my gyno about.
