What Causes Extreme Pain Behind The Left Knee?

I have extreme pain behind my left knee......last night I went to sit down and heard a LOUD pop.....the pain associated with the pop was so intense I felt like throwing up...I was unable to call my son because of the pain. I wanted to go to the ER, but my son and daughter in law said that there s nothing they can do for you ...put ice on it. I did that and still I can not bare to move it from side to side or put weight on it. What could this be?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Looks like you had a patellar subluxation. Consult an orthopedican who might suggest a x-ray and MRI scan to rule out ligament tear. Till then apply hot fomentation and do not put stress on you knee. Do not squat down or bend excessively the affected knee. Take pain killers if pain is unbearable.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Deepti Shivakumar
