What Causes Excessive Thirst And Marks On The Legs Of A Child?

My son just turned 2yr of age and he excessively drinks at night and urinates at night to the point of constantly soaking his pants and the bed at least 3x a night. There is no HX of Diabetes in the family and he only does this at night time. He also sweats really bad and I keep it pretty cold in the house. He recently started getting marks that look like big circles all up and down his legs but he doesn't itch them and they go away but come back. Can you please ease my mind a little. I am a nurse and have seen a lot so I am very nervous and worried.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Compulsive polydipsia comes to mind. There is no diabetes or kidney problem in this condition, and the child just seems to WANT to drink more fluids. The other problems that you have mentioned seem to be unrelated to this drinking and urinating problem. Excessive sweating can be a sign of vitamin D deficiency, but can also occur with significant heart conditions. The marks that he is getting on the legs - are they painful? It would be a good idea to send the photos of these marks to someone here through a paid query, so that diagnosis is easier.

I am afraid that is the best I can do with this question. Do take him to a pediatrician for a complete evaluation. He is too young to go for counselling, but you can begin to gradually restrict his fluid intake after sundown. Also, wake him up after 1 1/2 to 2 hours after he goes to bed and make him go to the loo. This will reduce the problem of bed-wetting over time.
