What Causes Excessive Sleepiness While Suffering From AFIB?

My 94 year old Mom (who lives with my 95 year old Dad, in a senior community) has recently begun sleeping almost all day - falling asleep at meals, etc., but sleeps through the night. She has AFIB and dementia. Not sure why this is happening, boredom? AFIB issue?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are concerned about your 94 years old mom who has recently been falling asleep more often. There are a few factors causing this:

- her personal history of having AFIB and dementia and related medications
- changes in her blood pressure and blood sugar levels (should monitor them, keep a record for a future reference)
- age (94 years old, low metabolism)

So, monitor her BP and blood sugar levels, advise to keep her well hydrated and have meals regularly and let the Nature be. Further consultation with her caring doctor should make to ensure her medications are ok and need no changes in dosage or therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
