What Causes Excessive Sleepiness In An Elderly Person?
My husband was diagnosed over a year ago, and was nearly in a coma then. He had symptoms for years but there wasn a definite diagnosis. He is nearly 70 and has had numerous other health issues too. He can barely function at times and appears grandchild. He seems to almost be sleeping while half conscious. His movements are unbearably slow. It has been Life changing. He takes l lactulose but not regularly. He is just wiped out. Help.
The possibility of brain-related pathology is more likely for his excessive sleepiness. So better to consult a neurologist and get done clinical examination and MRI of the brain. If MRI is normal then get done serum sodium level as hyponatremia (low serum sodium) can also cause similar symptoms in old age.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar,
