What Causes Excess Weight Gain, pain In Upper Thighs Along With Enlarged Prostrate?

I am 68 years old a former footballer and sports centre manager. I have put on weight steadily since retirement and now weigh 21 stone and have pains in my upper thighs after walking a short distance and if I stand still I get pins and needles down my legs. Other than that I have an enlarged prostrate which I have pills for and need the toilet every 2 hours breaking my sleep. I have had blood and urine tests for everything including diabetes and thioride and regular psi checks and blood preasure checks and they all come back as normal. Recently I have a flue like ach all day forcing me to take two Anadin Extra every morning which makes me feel much better. Paracetamal and other pain killers don t work. My major problem is I now cannot walk more than 100 yards without sitting down ,when I sit down the pain goes away.

Hello,

Given your age, prostatomegaly is a common thing which can likely cause your above mentioned symptoms. Also, if you are a smoker there is a possibility of peripheral artery disease as it will present with similar complaints you been having, better to evaluate if problem has been persistent. A surgeon / vascular surgeon should be helpful.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suchita Yohan Halli, Emergency Medicine Specialist
