What Causes Excess Talking In A Person Having Depression?

My boyfriend of 4 years continuously talks about his emotions, feelings, a future, his depression, etc. He is possessive, jealous of my children, the time i am at work fulltime or need to sleep (he doesn t work, he is on a disablity pension for bipolar and borderline)... and we continue to discuss for 6 hours every day about him. I try to tell him that too much of his psychoanalyzing of me and him and us, and no fun or doing anything normal is extremely draining on me. He says all the professionals advise is to talk about your feelings . I say that too much of that and no fun is not healthy. I NEED some articles to validate that lots of talking is not always the right thing for a relationship. Pls Pls

Hello,

I can understand your concern and I appreciate your willingness to help your partner. Being a single source of help for a depressed person takes a toll on the supportive person as it is taking toll on you. As he is depressed, he is right in his needs to talk but you are also right in feeling frustrated and tired with too much talking of feelings.

I would advise you to make a support group for him and do not become a single pole for him to lean on. Make a list of all your friends and relatives who can support him and you can ask them to help you and your boyfriend.

In addition, if your boyfriend has major depression, only talking about feelings will not cure him. He might need counselling sessions and prescription medicines for depression by a mental health professional. You can ask him to use these two options and make clear that even though you care for him and want to help him, his excessive needs are taking a toll on you while there are other options that can help him better and save your relationship.

I am sorry I cannot find any articles for you regarding this but you can use Internet and Library to search for the literature you need to support your argument. I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
