What Causes Excess Skin Dryness While Using Bactrim For Hives?

I am a 31 year old female, 6 months postpartum, Hypothryroidism which is controlled by Synthroid. Two weeks ago I got a bacterial infection in my intestines. I was given on Flagyl, which I broke out into hives on my face and neck, so they dc that and switched it to Bactrim. I was given benedryl and the hives went away. It has now been about 4 days since my last dose of Bactrim, but since then I have noticed my face has become increasingly dryer despite putting coconut oil on it. Feels like there is a layer of tight skin over my whole face and is rough to the touch, and my neck has little red bumps. If I put anything on it besides cold water and coconut oil ( shea butter, baby eczema Lotion, makeup) it begins to burn and sting SO bad that I have to run to the sink and apply a cold towel to get whatever it was off. my face then is bright red and irritated looking and my neck is covered in itchy little red bumps. I recently moved and have yet to find a dr here, so I am hoping its not something that gets worse.

Hi,

It may take few days for the skin to regain its normal health and consistency after recovery from hives. Try applying an emollient like calamine lotion and continue antihistamines like levocetirizine 5mg at night(this is less sedating than benadryl) for 5 days. If still not getting better in 3-5 days, kindly see a dermatologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
