What Causes Erythema Nodosum?

I went to urgent care today because I am concern about bumps, like bites, however the doctor said something about erythema nodosam. I believe that is the spelling, can you tell me about this. She was not able to verify but referred me to a dermatologist in order to get biopsy.

Hi,
Thanks for writing to hcm.
It is an inflammatory condition caused due to delayed hypersensitivity reaction. It occurs due to inflammation of the fat cells in the skin leading to formation of reddish purple nodules in the shin.
It is self limiting 3-6 weeks and can be diagnosed by a biopsy.
Treatment involves Non steoidal antiinflammatory drugs to decrease inflammation. Also , since it is self limiting , the nodules go away in 3 - 6 weeks time.
Regards,
Dr.Riyanka
