What Causes Elevated Heart Rate After Taking Risperdal?
my wife is on Risperdal for pyschosis as a result of early adult onset Alzheimer's disease she has been on it for a few weeks, 1mg, three times a day. her heart rate is 110/ 120. she is listless but has been this way. Is the heart rate of concern. it appears to be regular. have a call in to her neurologist/psychiatrist. waiting to hear back. what's your opinion
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Risperidal is Risperidon and the drug is an antipsychotic drug of second generation antipsychotic agents. The drug is a safe drug at 1 mg doses but in some individuals it can cause increased restlessness, anxiety, palpitations, rapid heart rate and akathisia like symptoms. The rapid heart rate your wife is having is probably due to these side effects. In most cases reduction of dose or starting with low doses and then gradually increasing the dose helps. Medicines especially beta blockers as Propranolol are found to be useful in such symptoms. If her symptoms worsen then visit her psychiatrist and take prescription of the drug. In my opinion there is no need to worry.
Thanks, I hope this helps you.
Take care
